COMMON SCENTS

Scent is such an evocative sense. Do you remember what After Shave your boyfriend wore in High School ( British Sterling or English Leather) or what shampoo you used as a teen (Breck or Prell)? And who could forget Jean Nate or Desert Rose? What about the smell we associate with Thanksgiving or Christmas? All you have to do is smell a faint whiff of a fragrance from your past and you are right back there, in the moment.

Beverly at How Sweet the Sound has a post about perfumes today and as I read the comments I remembered all the perfumes/colognes I had used in my life and I could actually smell them! And that perfumed stationary I used to write to my beau on, well that was another time and place for sure! Last night I made Scalloped Potatoes with Ham ( before I went to Fenway Park) and the aroma brought me back to the gathering room in our Church basement where we would go for the Dime a Dip suppers back in the 50s. Of course they used to be Nickel a Dip before the price doubled.

So tell me, what perfume do you wear and what is the most evocative scent from your life?

Later,

Janet

P.S. Nantucket Briar is my signature scent now, but I have had many in my not so lurid past, lol.

  1. My signature scent is Calyx by Prescriptives. It's very fresh and men like it.

  2. My sig scent is Premier Jour by Nina Ricci. It's been my favorite for quite a few years and I'm so happy I can buy it at a great discount at Scentiments.com

  3. I don't wear perfume, haven't for about 12 years. Scents can really "set off" certain people, especially children, so as a teacher I stopped wearing it. I love the scent of lavender in my bedroom. I use lavender scented detergent, and have a diffuser on the dresser. I also love the smell of things baking, but nothing specific, so I burn Yankee Candle Heart & Home scent in the winters.
My very first perfume was Love's Baby Soft, and in college I wore Liz Claiborne in the red triangle bottle!
One scent that always brings me back is Jean Nate, too! I always thought it smelled so fresh.

  4. I love Estee Lauder Sensuous. I have always been partial to "Pleasures", but when this newer scent came out this year I was hooked!

Ivory soap is probably my favorite scent from childhood. I can remember that was all Mother would buy and we always smelled so good after our baths. This is also what I buy for my children to use!

    What a fun post!

  6. Janet,

I'm afraid I do not have a signature scent. However, I recall memories of my mother wearing Chanel No. #5. She always smelled so beautiful.

It's funny how smells bring back memories, isn't it?

  7. I like spicy smells in my home, but I like flowery smells to wear.

In junior high school all of the girls wore Canoe - which is for men. But, we all loved it.

Then in high school all the girls wore Estee Lauder Youth Dew, but I am so allergic to that scent. I wore Chanel No. 5.

When I got married, I switched to L'air du Temps for about fifteen years. Then I went back to No. 5.

Now I wear Philosophy Amazing Grace.

  9. My boyfriend wore Brut...or Hi Karate...lol.

I don't wear perfumes, but if I did it would be a light citrus scent I think.

  10. My boyfriend wore Elsha, and I used Breck, but remember the pearl in the Prell. In High School I switched to Wells Balsam something or other, Farrah Fawsett used it, it had to be great! When I was younger I wore Avon Sweet Honesty, now I wear Cashmere Mist from Donna Karan. It is very light and soft. A favorite smell, ohh so many. Fresh baked bread, Christmas Trees, Clorox. At our old house, sometimes early in the morning when it was still kind of dewy outside, it smelled just like the tarmac at LAX, good memories there.

  12. I love Nantucket Briar. I used to buy the room spray all the time. I should go get some more of that!!!

I wear Jessica McClintock cologne now. I love clean smelling colognes.

I love the smell of men's cologne and I still love the smell of Ralph Lauren's Polo because it reminds me of being young and in love! If I walk by a man wearing it, it just takes me back in time! My dad wore Old Spice when I was little so that's another scent that takes me back even further!

  14. Better late than never, they say. Who that is exactly, I don't know, but in this case I agree.

Have worn Eternity for over 20 years, but every once in a while, I take a break and search out something new. I am loving Philosophy "Amazing Grace" right now. Very girly and lasts a long time..

  15. My HS boyfriend wore Old English. Oh how I thought it was the end all be all...: )

I have several I wear now. I have Philosophy's Amazing Grace and Falling In LOve. Donna Karan's Cashmire Mist. Cool Water, Eternity and Clinique's Happy.

    Depends on my mood!

I am hugely influenced by scents...good and not so.
I can sniff something and immediately be transported back to the first time I smelled that scent.

    Love,
    Sue
