HOLIDAY BLAHS

photo from Pottery Barn

When I started his blogging adventure at the end of October I thought I was so full of things to say and that I would have no problem posting each day. I started with such enthusiasm and a camera. That's all a girl needs to start a blog, right? Now, I seem to have slowed down, maybe it is the winter doldrums setting in; it certainly has been cold enough around her since Thanksgiving to qualify as winter. Maybe it is the holidays, who knows? I have most everything done for Christmas. The shopping was minimal this year as all the kids are gone and we are doing "couples gifts" such as a Kitchenaid mixer for one, gift cards to furniture store for another. I started decorating and then got kind of bogged down. I am seeing so much creativity on everyones' blogs and such talent that I was feeling like my decorating wasn't good enough or creative enough. But enough of the pity party. It IS coming together and it WILL look beautiful to me and my family, so there !!

Maybe I will put a Javalog in the fireplace and start to wrap tonight. Wrapped packages will look nice under the tree. Maybe tomorrow I will take some pictures of the decor for all to see.
That's a lot of maybes for sure.

Later,
Janet

  1. It is easy to get bogged down this time of year. I always am secretly glad when the Holidays are over and things get back to "normal". There the secret is out of the bag. I am sure you are doing a lovely job decorating your home. I can't wait to see your pictures :-)

  2. Hey, Janet...thought I'd stop over for a visit. This is the first time in years I've felt like decorating for the holidays...don't know what came over me! I love the name of your blog.

  3. Janet,
Don't feel bad, I have not bought ONE single gift yet...don't really feel like shopping. And yes there are a lot of creative people in blogland...I'm sure your decorating is just as lovely - can't wait to see it so get busy girlfriend!

  4. Hi Janet,
I thought I'd have a lot more to write about too, but I just don't find the time. Now it's dark when I leave in the a.m. and dark when I get home in the p.m. (yuck!) so I can't even take pictures until the weekends! (hate the flash!) and your decorating is FINE! Really! A lot of people admit on their blogs they do "selective photography" in otherwords, just to the right of that beautiful photo is a stack of dirty dishes!
Have a great rest of the week!

  6. Its tough to feel festive when you are just trying to keep up. I know that I am behind in my shopping, and kind of waiting for inspiration to strike, but hopefully, it will. Like my mother in law always says, keep your chin up and smile. Susan

  8. Don't feel bad, I bet your home is lovely. I haven't even started yet--it's hard with so many talented people out there posting gorgeous stuff every day! But I love your blog, so please don't give up! I'm sure you have tons to share!

  9. You don't have to post every day but I'd love to have you drop by, anytime. I too thought I'd have a lot more to say. I find visiting takes a lot of time, even though I enjoy it. My husband shakes his head at how much time I'm spending on the computer. Sometimes I jump up when I hear the garage door opening as he comes home from work. I act like I am folding clothes or something. LOL
Since I'm not working right now, I have replaced my prior number crunching on the computer with blogging.
Hope you have a great day!

  10. Janet, thank you for stopping by and leaving such lovely comments on my blog. When I drive from Massachusetts to South Burlington to visit my mom I feel like I am going home. Vermont is my favorite place on earth. I read your post and you really inspired me. It made me think about all this perfection we expect from ourselves really steals the season. Stop by and read today's post. Thank you for inspiring me Janet.

  11. Janet, I just read about you wanting a Ginny doll. I always loved mine. I also have one that was the 40th anniversary Birthday Ginny. I'll post it sometime. Yea, Barbie was toward the end of my doll days too. Barbie came out in 1959.
    See ya,
    Nan

  12. Hi Janet, yes, that pendant is made from a goose egg. Egg art is a centuries old art form, and just a ton of fun. You can see other egg art, to give you an idea of what it is like, by going into my categories section on the right, elegant egg art.

I'm off this morning to contemplate what the heck I'm going to give people for Christmas. Thanksgiving is just so much easier. : )

    Have a great day ...

  13. I know what you mean about feeling the blogging pressure...I think we all feel that way sometimes, but we shouldn't stress about it! What we love to put in our homes is who we are and if people don't like it...oh well. That's my mantra and I am sticking to it!

  14. Oh Janet, Please don't feel that way. I know your home is beautifully decorated with the memories created by your family. I always have a "blue" spell leading up to Christmas Day but something always happens to break me out of the mood like getting a Christmas card from someone I haven't heard from in years or like making that little reindeer Christmas card. It just put me in the Christmas spirit. I was bogged down last week when all the decoration boxes were piled up everywhere and the house was such a mess. That's all put away now and I feel much better. Please don't give up your posting. I love visiting here. Hugs, Lynn

  15. "I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year." Christmas isn't about the decorations or even the gifts...it's a spirit that you share all the year. In the short time I've "known" you, I feel this to be true of you, too!

  16. Hi - I read your comment over on Black Eyed Susan's blog and was curious, popped on over. Your blog is very nice. There's a little icon going around the blogoverse - can't remember what it says exactly, but something like "Blogging without Obligation" or something like that. The idea being that you should blog when and how often the spirit hits you and don't feel guilty when you can't or don't feel like it. I mean, do you have the time to visit all your real time friends every day? Or even every week? I certainly don't! Some of them are lucky if I see or call them once or twice a year! I usually feel I have so much to say that there's not enough days in the week to post it all and then suddenly I run dry and don't feel like anything I have to say is worth the paper it's...er, monitor it's displayed on. We all have our blogging ups and downs.
As for the holidays and all those creative bloggers out there. They sure can be intimidating! But also inspiring. I've been trying to visit one or two a day to keep me full up with ideas. But the honest to goodness truth - come time for everyone to come home for the holidays my house will be half clean, my decorations will be "as good as they'll get", I probably won't have had time to put all the boxes away, I'll give up my grand ideas of baking and I'll go buy fancy cold cuts and cheeses for everyone to graze on all da. I'll have spent a lot of time between then and now stressing and worrying and wishing everything could be picture perfect even though I know from all those holidays that have gone before this one that this is an impossible goal. But with age comes at least a teensy bit of wisdom and I also know and hold onto the knowledge that despite all our imperfections, my family still wants to be come together and spend the holidays crammed into our small, cat hair covered, noisy, disorganized home. Because it's not really about the house or the food or the gifts. It's about making memories and being with those we love, even if it's just laughing together over a long distance phone call. Oh, gawd, I sound like some sappy phone company commercial, don't I!
Anyhoo, you're not the only one who feels holiday blahs. Just ride them out, do what you can, and enjoy.

  17. I am so behind this year that it is awful. And I do so understand feeling
that all the other bloggers have homes so much brighter and more Christmassy than mine! Some are so elegant and here is mine, over done and kitschy and cluttered. Still, it makes the kids happy and, well, me too I might as well say. I still have cards to do and cleaning and more laundry and, aw gee...I think I will just hum a few carols and sip a little hot cider and watch the Grinch again.

Your home will be lovely, IS lovely. So there!

    Hugs,
    Sue
